Reduce housing expenses with eco-friendly steps

Saving money usually is close to everyone's heart. It certainly is to mine. And if it can be done so that it also helps the environment, then it could be called double savings. It gives your wallet a break and does the same to the earth.

Let's look at some of the easy yet often overlooked ways to achieve savings that can make a difference. Compact florescent light bulb, or CFL, is coming on strong nowadays. Installing five of them in place of the regular incandescent bulbs can easily save you about 50% per year in you power bill. That would definitely help. Now, should every household in the U.S. do that, it would get rid of greenhouse gas in the amount that 8 million cars produce each year. That is a staggering figure.

Another inexpensive way to save would be a programmable thermostat. It could put more than a $100 per year more money in your pocket, but the real savings come on the environmental side. All you need is have one out of every 10 households use one of them and that would remove 17 billion pounds of greenhouse gases. Energy Star Action Guide is the source on this one.

This is my favorite. Go ahead and purchase local produce. So, where are the savings, you might ask? Shipping produce will certainly drive up the price. Moreover, it is fresh, in most cases it's available only hours after having been picked. And the environmental benefits come from the lesser need for gas-guzzling trucks hauling the product for hundreds or thousands of miles.

I'm sure there are plenty of other ways to save and benefit the earth, so feel free to add yours to the list.

I'm definitely for that...I've been using CFL's for many years now...it's eco-friendly and it's pocket book friendly.

I love the ideas you posted.  We all know we should be doing these things, but a little reminding never hurts!

Armando,

CFLs can save a lot of money, if more people only knew.

Hope,

These are pretty basic, but can save serious money and help the environment.

Greetings Esko.  Thanks for this great Blog topic.

As I just mentioned over at another blog by Stephanie Edwards I am all for making sure people understand how big the popular work GREEN really is.  Here is a copy of what I just wrote in reply to her blog (see: http://activerain.com/blogsview/149984/The-Difference-Between-High for the full text):

Stephanie, amen to the "hybrid" of the two.  Being GREEN has more to it than simply being environmentally wise.  Being GREEN is also about being economically wise.  We love our GREEN earth, but we are wise to watch how much GREEN is leaving our pocket books as well.

So watching all aspect of the GREEN issue is truly the only way to go.  We must remind ourselves that being GREEN is a very BIG and complex issue, and we should do all that we can to be educated on as many aspects of it as possible, or be sure to hire those that we trust to be that professional for us.

It just goes to show you that it is not that hard to become GREEN.  All it take is alot of people taking some small steps -- and then later bigger steps!  It is simply a change in the way we all think about things.  Everyone is talking GREEN on TV -- there are lots of ways to begin.

DJ,

Saving money and going eco-friendly doubles the benefits.

Joan,

Some small steps, like the CFL, can make a big difference.

Hey Esko - Great post. Also, water is a problem. Install low flush toilets and front loading washing machines. That's right, washing machines. Saves a huge amount of water and easier on your clothes. I can't believe I wrote that! Make your second home in Costa Rica. (You knew a plug was coming). Over 80% of the electric power is hydro, so between The Hoover Dam and your beach place in Costa Rica, your carbon footprint is a pawprint.

Robert,

Especially here in Vegas water is a problem. My next washing machine is front loader. Been to Honduras several times, next it's Costa Rica.
